Adobe After Effects เป็นซอฟต์แวร์ชั้นนำในตลาดสำหรับการสร้างเอฟเฟกต์พิเศษ (special effects) โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่ง เอฟเฟกต์ประเภทกราฟิกเคลื่อนที่ และภาพเคลื่อนไหวต่างๆ
ในแง่ของความรู้สึกแล้ว Adobe After Effects นั้นคล้ายๆ กับ Photoshop ในส่วนของวิดีโอ ซึ่งมันจะมีเครื่องมือต่างๆ ที่คล้ายกับ Image Editor ยอดนิยมของ Adobe นั่นเอง แต่จะดัดแปลงในส่วนของวิดีโอเป็นหลัก ตัวอย่างเช่น หนึ่งในเครื่องมือใหม่ที่สุดก็คือ RotoBrush นั่นเอง ซึ่งมันจะทำงานคล้ายกับ Magic Wand ของ Photoshop ซึ่งจะยอมให้คุณเลือก Silhouettes และวางตัวละครลงในพื้นหลังชนิดต่างๆ ได้ โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องใช้ Chroma screen เลย
Adobe After Effects นั้นมาพร้อมกับเครื่องมือสำหรับวิดีโอโดยเฉพาะ (video-specific tools) อีกจำนวนมาก เช่น Auto-Keyframe ซึ่งจะสร้างเฟรมหลัก (key frames) ให้คุณได้อย่างอัตโนมัติในที่ที่คุณใช้ Video Effect และ Mesh Warp Effect ในภาพ 3 มิติ ซึ่งต้องขอบคุณคุณสมบัติดังกล่าวที่ทำให้คุณสามารถสร้างภาพวิดีโอแบบแปลกๆ ได้
แต่ถ้าจะมีอะไรที่โดดเด่นเป็นพิเศษใน Adobe After Effects นั่นก็คงจะเป็นปลั๊กอินที่เป็น Third-party อย่าง Mocha เป็นต้น โดยปลั๊กอินตัวนี้เป็นระบบติดตามที่มีความก้าวหน้า (advanced tracking system) ที่ช่วยคุณสร้างและปรับเปลี่ยนฉากต่างๆ ได้โดยสะดวก ในขณะที่ปลั๊กอินอีกตัวหนึ่งอย่าง Color Finesse นั้น ก็ช่วยให้คุณสามารถจัดการกับสีภายในวิดีโอของคุณได้แบบที่ไม่เคยเป็นมาก่อนเลย
เวอร์ชันล่าสุดของ Adobe After Effects ได้ปรับปรุงประสิทธิภาพเพิ่มขึ้นอย่างเห็นได้ชัด แต่ข้อเสียของมันเรื่องหนึ่งก็คือ ในตอนนี้มันใช้ได้เฉพาะบนคอมพิวเตอร์ที่ทำงานในระดับ 64 บิตเท่านั้น
